Embark on a 4WD adventure through the remote and wild heart of Western Australia’s Kimberley Region on our 16-night Gibb River Road fly-drive holiday.

Drive through intensely coloured landscapes and explore dramatic gorges with tumbling waterfalls and lush rock pools. Experience outback living at historic homesteads and working cattle stations. Explore the 700,000-acre El Questro Wilderness Park on horseback, on a 4WD guided adventure, or from the skies by helicopter.

Drive across the red sands of the outback and discover the mystical Purnululu National Park, an area that remained largely unknown until 1982. Here you will explore the distinctive bee-hive dome shaped Bungle Bungles and Cathedral Gorge.

The vibrant outback town of Kununurra is the gateway to cruises on Lake Argyle and guided tours of Argyle’s diamond mine. or scenic flights over Purnululu National Park and the mystical bee-hive dome shaped Bungle Bungles. Enter Northern Territory where you will stop at Katherine where you can take a cruise along Katherine River through Nitmiluk Gorge. Your final leg of the journey is north to Darwin, or you may wish to extend your tour and visit Kakadu National Park.

Itinerary

Upon arrival, you will be transferred the short distance from the airport to your hotel by coach. The evening is at your leisure; we suggest taking a stroll to Cable Beach with a chilled bottle of wine or a frosty cold beer to witness its enchanting sunsets.
Broome has many fascinating natural attractions to discover, including the red ochre cliffs and dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point. Scenic flights can take you out over the Buccaneer Archipelago and Cape Leveque, where the contrasting colours of the red cliffs, snow-white sand and turquoise sea all meet. Broome was built on the pearling trade, so a visit isn’t complete without a cruise to Willie Creek Pearl Farm.
Broome is brimming with cultural experiences, including walks through the mangrove forests to learn about the unique ecosystem with Aboriginal Yawuru man Bart Pigram. Visit the Japanese cemetery with it 900 standstone rock gravestones. Take a break at Matso's for an ice cold beer at Australia's most remote brewery, while in the evening you can watch a movie under the stars at Chinatown's Heritage-listed Sun Pictures.
Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge, Western Australia
Today you will collect your 4WD rental vehicle and be heading onto the unsealed and corrugated road of the Gibb River Road. Travel northwest to wade through the cool waters at Tunnel Creek National Park and make time to stop at Windjana Gorge National Park. Continue travelling on the Gibb River Road until you reach Saddlers Creek crossing, the entry point for Imintji Safari Camp. Hotel - Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge
Mount Elizabeth, Western Australia
Continue your off-road adventure along Kimberley’s Gibb River Road to Mount Elizabeth. Stops worth considering include Galvan’s and Barnett Gorge. Picturesque Galvan’s Gorge is a delightful place for a refreshing dip in the rockpool, which is fed by a multi-tiered waterfall; here you can also find a fine specimen of Wandjina rock art. A challenging drive along the Gibb River Road brings you to El Questro Wilderness Park, an untamed wilderness of deep gorges, thermal springs and cascading waterfalls in the heart of the Kimberley region.

With 700,000 acres to explore, we suggest opting for a guided activity, such a cruise through Chamberlain Gorge, bursting with diverse flora and fauna. 4WD adventures include guided barramundi fishing tours or exploring remote gorges; horseback riding takes you off the beaten track; and scenic helicopter flights transport you over gorges and majestic mountain ranges. Fly to pristine swimming holes or fly over Mitchell Falls and the rugged Kimberley coast.
Purnululu National Park, Western Australia
After leaving El Questro today, park up your rental vehicle at Kununurra for your Aviair flight over the Ord River, Lake Argyle and Osmand Ranges, completing your flight with a stunning circuit over the Bungle Bungle Range. Today you will walk among the spectacular beehive-shaped domes and to the mesmerising Cathedral Gorge. A chef prepared dinner is served before retiring to your rustic lodge cabin for the night. Purnululu National Park, Western Australia
Start your day with a leisurely breakfast before a 65 minute journey to the northern end of Purnululu National Park. Here you will take a guided walk to Echidna Chasm, where the gorge walls are up to 200 metres in height and barely a metre wide in places. Kununurra, Western Australia
After breakfast you are transferred to the airstrip for a scenic flight back to Kununurra, passing over the Argyle Diamond Mine, Ragged Ranges and Carr Boyd Ranges. Staying at Hotel Kununurra
Katherine, Northern Territory
Your adventure today leads to the Northern Territory and the town of Katherine. As you travel southeast of Kununurra towards the border, consider stopping at Lake Argyle. The lake is 45 miles from Kununurra. The Victoria Highway will take you through the town of Timber Creek and the Gregory National Park before reaching today’s destination of Katherine. No stop in Katherine is complete without exploring Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge). Travel through time while passing through the three gorges on this 4-hour tour and cruise. Marvel at the sheer rock face walls and striking scenery as you venture deeper into the gorge. There is time for a swim and light refreshments before returning to back to Katherine. Take a leisurely drive to World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. Stop for a soak in Katherine Hot Springs before taking a short detour to the cascading Edith Falls. Before reaching your Kakadu accommodation, visit one of Kakadu's lesser-known attractions, Maguk (Barramundi Gorge Waterfall) where you can take a refreshing swim in the natural plunge pool. This morning explore Kakadu at your leisure, maybe an optional scenic flight over the park to experience from the air. Stop at Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) where you can witness some of Australia's most famous rock art on a ranger-led walk. Continue your drive to Finnis River Lodge, a luxury lodge set on a 50,000-acre family owned and operated outback cattle station.
While at Finnis River Lodge you will enjoy gourmet dining, a selection of beverages and a choice of activities all included in your stay. Explore the cattle station on an ATV, travelling along bush tracks while taking in the incredibly diverse flora and fauna. Join walk about safaris, glide over the water on an airboat*, and end the day with a cow and canapes experience, with sundowners amongst a herd of Brahman cows. Depart Finnis River Lodge for the short drive to Darwin, the last stop of your Western Australia and Northern Territory Outback Wilderness Adventure. Make your way to Darwin Airport where you will return your hire vehicle in time for your flight to the UK.
