This luxury lodge is nestled on the pristine coast of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, in a picturesque dune forest within the Isimangaliso World Heritage Park, a World Heritage Site. Separated from the rest of the world by long, sandy roads, it exists in complete isolation. In true KwaZulu-Natal style, the lodge resort presents in a string of Zulu thatched boma huts with eco interiors. The elegant rooms are adorned by the same welcoming tones, greeting couples and families with ocean or forest views.

Nearby, the warm waters coax you in for sessions of snorkelling and scuba diving, along with other sea bound adventures. For a slower pace, candlelight dining and soothing spa treatments are also available, both using ingredients and techniques inspired and informed by the natural surroundings. Spend the rest of your sunlit days enjoing guided forest walks, sundowner cruises to spot dolphins and whales, and seasonal turtle tracking.

Wildlife Experiences

If you visit in November to February, you can catch the circle of life in full flow with some turtle tracking. Watch mother turtles arise from the sea, head to the beach, and then lay their eggs. From June to September, you can see whales stalking the seas.

Watersports

Active travellers will love the opportunities at sea, including scuba diving and snorkelling, or kayaking on Lake Sibaya. You can also take part in an incredible ocean safari, taking to the waves in search of dolphins and whales, and soaking up the views. If you’re there at the right time, you might see bottlenose or spinner dolphins, manta rays, and giant sea turtles.

Off the Grid

Residing in the heart of some of the world’s most beautiful scenery, the lodge offers plenty of opportunities to ensure you can make the most of it. The guided forest walk takes you through coastal forests, unspoiled sandy beaches, and grasslands. There are many of endemic species in the area to admire, including over 440 bird species, 2,200 ?owering plants, 282 butter?y and 228 spider species.

For something more relaxing, head to the spa, an oasis for the senses that also owes much of its excellence to the surrounding nature. You can indulge in facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, hot stone therapy and reflexology, all of which are inspired by the energy of the sea.

To venture further afield, join a cultural tour of iSimangalisa, home to the Tsonga people. Explore a local homestead, school and clinic so that you can experience how the Tsonga people go about their day-to-day lives.

Thonga Beach Lodge's location is crucial for the protection of sea turtles.
