Hotel information
Quietly revelling in its stunning setting on Vanua Levu Island, one of the lesser-known destinations in Fiji, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort rewards its guests with some seriously impressive facilities and views, throwing in delicious full board fare to make it all the more hassle-free.
The hotel is spread across 17 verdant acres (which used to be a coconut plantation in a former life) but has since been transformed into this laidback-luxe resort by the son of the famous explorer, Jacques Cousteau. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that this boutique Fiji hotel comes with a top-class dive centre, resident marine biologist and raft of activities to help you get under the skin of such an incredible destination.
Whilst the eco-conscious Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a fine five-star choice for romantic retreats, with its holistic seafront spa and yoga pavilions, dive school, glistening infinity pools, untouched beaches and inspired cuisine, it’s also a top family-friendly option too and has even won awards for its family-friendly credentials.
The reason is that – in addition to the kids clubs and children’s pools, waterslides, jungle gym, tailored family programs and countless activities – all young guests are assigned a personal nanny or buddy (depending on their age) on arrival, for the entire duration of your stay; a thoughtful touch if looking to maximise your downtime on the island.
Room Options
Thatched roofs, wooden features and hammocks hinting at relaxation; the 25 bures here at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort scream boutique Fijian chic. Some are set within the gardens, others directly on the beach, though all boast king-size beds, daybeds, terraces, minibars and spacious bedrooms starting at 44sq m.
Gardenview Bure
Tucked away amidst the greenery of the resort gardens, these bures are truly charming hideaways with their terraces, hammocks, king-size beds, daybeds and en suites with twin sinks and a shower.Oceanfront Bure
Available with one or two bedrooms, the Oceanfront Bures are set just a stone’s throw from the beach with sundecks facing the sea, furnished with hammocks and sun loungers. The bures themselves are split-level and come with daybeds and king-size beds (or twin beds in the second bedroom).Deluxe Oceanfront Two-bedroom Bure
This Deluxe Bure is located close to the beach and has a large floorplan incorporating two bedrooms (the second can be a king or twin setup), two bathrooms and a shared terrace with sun loungers and a hammock.Point Reef Bure
These larger, split-level bures have king-size beds and balconies looking out over the ocean on the higher floor, and living rooms on the lower, plus spacious terraces with hammocks and daybeds too. They are also located in more remote corners of the resort and bestow wonderful views of the sunset.Honeymoon Point Reef Bure
This particular Point Reef Bure is especially romantic, with an al fresco hot tub on the balcony, plus a lower-level living room, terrace, hammock, daybed and sunset views.Presidential Villa
The Presidential Villa really is the cream of the crop, an expansive abode complete with private pool, large terrace, lounge, kitchenette, daybed, king bedroom, jetted tub and separate shower in the bathroom plus an outdoor shower too, all found within a walled garden. Additional perks include a bottle of wine upon arrival, an hour’s massage per person, and evening cocktails and canapes.Facilities/Amenities
The Bula Club for kids is outstanding, an award-winning centre that provides each child with either a personal nanny (under 5s) or buddy (under 12s), as well as an exciting program of activities that incorporates everything from cookery to mangrove replantation. The facilities are impressive too, encompassing two kids pools with waterslides, a pool for toddlers, jungle gym, zip line, trampoline, sandbox, arts and crafts centre, nursery bure and treehouse – it really is fantastic! The nanny/buddy service is offered between the hours of 9am to 9pm, so parents can hit the swimming pool, spa, beach or boutique for as long as they please.
Restaurants & Bars
Jean-Michel Cousteau Restaurant
In this lovely beachside eatery, you can feast on locally sourced ingredients transformed into delectable South Pacific and Asian-inspired dishes, such as chilli mud crab and Fijian pork, with the luminous sea as your backdrop. All meals are included as part of the full board package here, even the weekly lovo feast; tuck into delicacies slow-cooked in banana leaves over a firepit, with music provided by the fantastic Bula Boys. It’s also a nice touch that the restaurant features designated adults-only and family areas, though you can also request a private meal on the pier for something extra special.

Lounge Bar
Sit back and relax as you sip zingy cocktails, chilled beers or smooth wines in the Lounge Bar, surely the best place to conclude each day in paradise.
Activities & Entertainment
Diving takes centre stage at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, which comes as no surprise since Jean-Michel and his father Jacques Cousteau are well-known for their diving expertise! The dive centre caters to all dive levels, and guests can become certified divers with a three-day course that takes you to nearby reefs like Namena, brimming as they are with kaleidoscopic coral and fish. Of course, snorkelling and other watersports are also available, like stand-up paddle boarding, sailing, glass bottom boat tours, kayaking and more, plus there’s a marine biologist onsite to help educate guests through presentations, reef assessments and snorkelling trips.
That’s just the start though, as at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji you can play tennis and volleyball; go on eco tours and medicinal walks; embark on fishing trips; and enjoy traditional Fijian storytelling sessions. Meanwhile, children have a whole host of kid-friendly activities designed especially for them.
