Newfoundland’s capital city St John’s is less than a six-hour flight from the UK, so makes for an easy long weekend break. Wander through city streets filled with brightly coloured houses and explore the quaint fishing village of Quidi Vidi.

You will sail through Witless Bay Ecological Reserve on a puffin and whale watching cruise. The area is home to hundreds of thousands of Atlantic puffins, as well as some of the best feeding grounds for migrating humpback whales.

Puffins can be seen from May, and whales can be spotted from mid-June to September. Visitors to the area may also be lucky enough to see colossal icebergs until mid-June.

Itinerary

Day 1 UK - St. John’s

Take a flight from the UK to St. John’s International Airport in Newfoundland. Upon arrival collect your rental vehicle and make your own way to your city centre hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to explore this vibrant city, known for its pastel coloured clapboard houses.

Day 2 Whale Watching, Puffins

Drive from St. John’s to Bay Bulls, where you will board Gatherall’s boat for a true wildlife extravaganza. You will sail around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve to cliffs that are home to hundreds of thousands of Atlantic Puffins. The waters of the reserve are some of the best feeding grounds for whales in Atlantic Canada, and the annual migration of humpback whales each summer is a magnificent sight.

Day 3 St. John’s Newfoundland

Spend a full day exploring St. John’s, a combination of small-town charm and big-city amenities. Hike up Signal Hill, where colourful wooden homes sit precariously on cliff edges. Visit the Newman Wine Vaults Provincial Historic Site and learn about the historical connection with wines produced in Portugal.
