Portugal, with its golden sands, dramatic coastline, child-friendly attractions and charming historic towns, is a great choice for a family holiday. These highlights are complemented with an abundance of delicious cuisine, much of which will appeal to young taste buds too, especially the famous pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart). The Algarve and Madeira are especially great destinations for families with warm weather, short flight times and little to no time difference.

The Algarve region stretches along Portugal’s southern coastline, offering established resorts to suit every family holiday. Surfing, scenery, sports and culture; there is so much to enjoy that it’s no wonder families choose to come here again and again. With flights taking less than 3 hours from most UK airports, and milder temperatures than its more southerly European cousins, the Algarve is an especially great choice for those travelling with toddlers.

Spend the day at Zoomarine, a water park, aquarium and sealife centre all in one (opens seasonally so do check before you go!). Why not play a round of golf as a family? The Algarve is world-renowned for its excellent courses. Or take a boat trip from Lagos or Portimao and go dolphin-watching.

Nearly 600 miles off the coast of the mainland, Madeira also enjoys a mild climate all year round, making it a great option for winter warmth, or splash-about fun in the heat of summer. Go hiking in the levada trails of Madeira; walk alongside ‘mini-canals’ that provide the island with irrigation, crisscrossing a host of landscapes en route. Take a truly unique boat ride on a replica of Christopher Columbus’s boat, Santa Maria or visit in April when the country is in full bloom and enjoy the Madeira Flower Festival.
