The Marlborough

Housed in a former convent that dates back to the turn of the 20th century, Marlborough Lodge fuses this Victorian heritage with a stunning setting: the rolling vines of New Zealand’s greatest wine region.

Why you'll love it here

  • Houses just ten unique rooms where you can unwind with a vintage on your veranda
  • Dine at garden-view Harvest Restaurant with à la carte dishes comprising daily changing farm-to-fork fare

  • At 6pm each evening the church bell rings, calling guests to join the general manager for pre-dinner drinks and canapes at the chapel

Full accommodation information

The Marlborough is a place that surprises and enchants guests in equal measures, with its picturesque grounds, sprawling vines and stately house that once served as a convent for nuns in the early 20th century.

Your arrival at Marlborough Lodge sets the tone for what’s to come during the rest of your stay, as you enter along a driveway lined by lavender, and staff are already on-hand with a glass of local wine ready for you.

The leafy trees landscaped lawns and fragrant flowers make for a gorgeous backdrop to this painstakingly preserved property, which is sure to impress with its pristine white veranda that leads into beautiful interiors. Parquet floors, hand-picked furnishings and stained-glass windows are just some of the many thoughtful touches here.

Continue to your guestroom, one of ten rooms and suites that have been designed with great taste and equipped with up-to-the-minute amenities: not only does each include a Nespresso machine, but also a kettle that you can boil up to varying temperatures depending on your tea of choice!

Elsewhere, Marlborough Lodge sports an attractive Great Room, outdoor terrace with fireplace, heated swimming pool and a tennis club next-door for active types.

Finally, the restaurant deserves a special mention, as this is where you can tuck into fine New Zealand cuisine paired with one of the estate’s very own wines, which is a special touch indeed.

All ten rooms at Marlborough Lodge exhibit a contemporary eye for design, while also exuding a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They are a confection of solid cedar doors (originating from the old convent), sheepskin rugs and patterned curtains to match the cushions or bedspread; a . The plant life bathrooms are then on site in marble and flaunt walk-in rain showers, dual vanities and egg-shaped tubs, while other top amenities include Nespresso machines, kettles that boil up to a variety of tea-specific temperatures, flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi.

Lodge Room

The two Lodge Rooms at Marlborough Lodge offer views of the estate from their ground floor perch. Both are tastefully decorated in oyster, with splashes of ice blue in one and ochre in the other, and are appointed with contemporary touches including Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, Nespresso machine and kettle. Both feature a queen-size bed and marble-clad en suite; one of which is wheelchair accessible.

The larger Lodge Suite also bestows views of the estate through French doors; the downstairs suite opens onto a veranda, while one of the upstairs suites has a balcony instead. They come with the same mod-cons as the Lodge Room, though with a king-size or twin bed setup.
Premium Suite

Premium Suite

The most expansive of all accommodation types at the lodge, the Premium Suites are generous in size and elegantly decorated too. Choose between a king-size bed or twin setup and enjoy the gorgeous views of the estate from your window. These suites are found both on the ground and first floors.

One of the most outstanding facilities at Marlborough Lodge is the adjacent Tennis Club, which dates to the 19th century and offers six grass courts for games in the summer months. Then there’s the heated outdoor pool, enveloped by lush gardens which are a highlight in themselves with acre upon acre of beautiful plantlife and blooming flowers. Complimentary bikes can be borrowed too if you feel like exploring the wider region.

Harvest Restaurant

Harvest Restaurant

Farm-to-fork fare is the order of the day at Marlborough Lodge, specialising in fresh flavours and innovative dishes. The Great Room (or indeed al fresco terrace) is where to sample moreish canapés late in the afternoon, while the main dining room has lots of windows for gazing out over the garden, whether sitting down to enjoy a continental breakfast or sumptuous a la carte dinner. Cuisine is varied and seasonal, but as an example you might order a Wakanui beef tartare for starters, Ora king salmon for main and perhaps an artisan cheeseboard to finish up; though this is just a taste of the many delicious plates on the menu.

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Situated as it is in the middle of Marlborough, the lodge has plenty up its sleeve for visitors to the region: starting with wine. This is the largest wine growing region in New Zealand, so oenophiles will have no end of wineries, vineyards and cellar doors to visit! That’s not all though, as Marlborough is a cultural mecca, so expect scores of museums, galleries, artisan eateries, Maori sites and more; not to mention nature experiences such as birding tours and whale watching trips.

If, however, you’d like to while away the hours onsite, you can opt for a game of tennis; a tour of the estate with the head gardener; a cooking demonstration; massage treatment; wine tasting; round of croquet or boules; maybe a gentle stroll through the grounds of Marlborough Lodge. Whatever your interests, there’s something here for you.
