Hotel information
Enjoy a rare sense of exclusivity on a luxurious couples’ getaway or family escape at Bawe Island, home to an alluring off-the-grid resort just a 30-minute boat ride from Zanzibar.
As one of the region’s newest and most distinctive island retreats, it promises an experience combining adventure with tranquillity. During your time on ‘the island within an island,’ you’ll be surrounded by lush green heartlands, crystalline waters and white sandbanks. The setting this creates feels worlds away from reality, yet remains within easy reach of Stone Town.
Life on Bawe Island is designed around both exploration and relaxation. The surrounding reefs invite you to dive or snorkel among tropical fish, sea cucumbers, turtles and, on occasion, dolphins. Whereas above the water, you can embrace watersports of every pace, from kayaking to paddleboarding, or take to two wheels and cycle around the island. If seeking something gentler, the spa is a serene sanctuary, while tennis and padel courts provide more active downtime.
Bawe Island makes travelling with children trouble-free, thanks to a well-run kids’ club that keeps younger ones happily occupied while you take a moment to relax. With its mix of energetic pursuits and quiet corners scattered across the island, the resort suits both couples and families alike—offering as much adventure or calm as you choose. With nothing similar in the area to compare it with, Bawe Island is truly unique: a private retreat where every detail is thoughtfully taken care of for you, and the beauty of the ocean shapes each moment into a memorable encounter.

Restaurants & Bars
Dining on Bawe Island is an extraordinary culinary journey, bringing a true gourmet philosophy to Zanzibar for the first time. Each restaurant has been designed to delight your senses, combining refined flavours with remarkable settings. With the island’s dine-around concept, you can explore an array of à la carte options, from authentic Italian to fresh teppanyaki beneath an ancient baobab.
The Sand
Enjoy breakfast or dinner at the resort's main restaurant, where you can feel soft sand under your feet, replacing a more traditional flooring to create a distinct and rustic feel. Your fresh dishes are served from live stations, immersing you in the moment as you tuck into some mouthwatering fare.
Sinfonia
Dine at a refined Italian trattoria that mixes traditional flavours of its popular national cuisine with contemporary flair. Savour everything from crispy, wood-fired pizzas to more classic dishes, potentially paired with a glass of red or a drink of your choice in a sophisticated, relaxed setting.
The View Bar
Perched in a top-view location overlooking the Indian Ocean, this bar is the place to be for crafted cocktails, live music and sunset views during your luxury island getaway. From morning to night, it transforms from a tranquil daytime retreat to a vibrant evening hotspot, ideal for social occasions.
The Beach Club
Want some casual, high-quality comfort food in a relaxed seaside atmosphere? This adults-only beachfront dining destination is open from 10 am to 6 pm to help whet your appetite. Whether it’s a long lunch or refreshments with friends and family, the laid-back setting here hits just right.
Rising Sun
Watch skilled chefs prepare your dish before your eyes, transforming traditional dining into an authentic and theatrical encounter. This interactive teppanyaki experience beneath an ancient baobab combines authentic Japanese cuisine with a dynamic, engaging culinary performance.
Activities & Entertainment
At Bawe Island, you’re invited to enjoy a host of wonderful activities. Begin with sunrise yoga in the Beach Pavilion, where the calm ocean sets the tone for balance and renewal. Stay active in the island’s fully equipped gym, where ocean views accompany every workout. Alternatively, you can challenge someone to a match on the tennis or padel courts, or take a slower pace by cycling quiet trails on your private bike, discovering hidden corners of the island along the way.
Adventure calls offshore, too: jet skiing delivers exhilarating speed across the open water, whereas scuba diving in the Changuu–Bawe Marine Conservation Area reveals coral gardens teeming with sea turtles, eagle rays and reef sharks. Head beneath the surface with your SSI instructor and be expertly guided into a crystal-clear underwater world alive with colour and life.
Families find equal delight, with a dedicated kids’ club set in lush gardens where imagination thrives, and babysitting services if you want a romantic evening under the stars. As night falls, the island transforms again—think beachside soirées, live music and cultural celebrations.
Sustainability Initiatives & Responsible Tourism
Bawe Island implements sustainability initiatives while ensuring a luxury experience for you.
More than half of the resort’s energy comes from Zanzibar’s largest solar array, while solar heaters provide hot water in each villa. A state-of-the-art system recycles wastewater for the gardens, where native flora flourishes alongside organic fruit and vegetables grown for garden-to-table dining.
Not only this, but single-use plastics have been eliminated in favour of an eco-friendly alternative in the bottling plant. Organic waste is carefully composted to nourish the island’s gardens, whereas seawater is purified through reverse osmosis to provide fresh drinking water for you and the staff.
Lastly, the island is embraced by Changuu–Bawe Marine Conservation Area. The recently designated protected zone safeguards vibrant coral reefs and marine life, allowing fragile ecosystems to thrive.
