Cliveden House

As much a piece of living national heritage and history as it is a five-star spa break, the quite spellbinding 17th century mansion of Cliveden House in Berkshire has certainly been dressed to impress.

Full accommodation information

The hotel is housed within one of England’s most revered – and exquisitely restored – 17th-century mansions yet boasting all the modern-day trappings of an exclusive luxury hotel.

The building itself dates back to 1666 and has been home to the Duke of Buckingham and Frederick Prince of Wales, as well as welcoming a long list of distinguished guests, royalty, duchesses and celebrities from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill during that time.

Once here, having spent mere moments admiring their 376 acres of stunning National Trust grounds, the famous parterre, tranquil water garden, octagonal temple, pavilion, amphitheatre, formal gardens, maze and woodlands – it’s easy to see the appeal for staying her during your England break.

Spa

As with everything else here, Cliveden’s spa facilities are first class. Multiple private treatment rooms will offer all kinds of holistic, oil-infused relaxation therapies, while the indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms are also simply magnificent. An outdoor pool, hot tubs, a gym and tennis courts complete the wellbeing offer at Cliveden, all of which is enhanced no end by the property’s internal and external majesty, each beautifully adorned guestroom or suite, and of course, the fabulous fine dining menus found in each of the two excellent onsite eateries.

And as grown-up as Cliveden clearly is, with that grandiose interior design, gourmet cuisine, heritage and history, this is actually a family-friendly spa break in Berkshire too.

As such, little ones will be kept busy at the storybook play den or during a walk through the woodland on a fun-filled trail, and why not arrange a babysitter while enjoying a romantic meal or spa treatment too?

Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of booking a stay at Cliveden however, is their two stunning, traditional and lovingly restored boats. You can head out on a gentle private voyage, romantic boat picnic for two or a champagne cruise for a truly special afternoon/evening.

All guestrooms and suites at Cliveden are finished to the same high standards, each also benefiting from its own distinct design and feel too. The main differences between them are their size and exact location around mansion, with certain rooms offering a slightly more modest floorplan and the larger options able to accommodate extras such as vintage rolltop bathtubs, a separate lounge area with fireplace and in some cases, a Jacuzzi.

Suites are generous spaces and come with some of the most impressive original features, while the standalone three-bedroom Spring Cottage is a cut above; ideal for families. No matter which you choose, a double, king-size or twin beds, a seating area and luxurious bathroom plus courtyard, garden or swimming pool views are also standard, and some of the higher category rooms include complimentary access to the Cliveden’s honesty bar area.

Club and Classic Rooms

Club and Classic Rooms

A Classic or Club Room offers 25-35sq m of space, king-size or double beds, ground-level courtyard views and a comfortable seating area. Certain rooms in this category also come with a Jacuzzi, so be sure to ask.
Deluxe Double Room

Deluxe Double Room

Deluxe Double Rooms are larger at 42-45sq m in size, and some are slightly more contemporary too with their colour palette chrome and cream replacing the more traditional interior design found elsewhere. A handful of the Deluxe Room category also come with a fireplace and others a Jacuzzi, so be sure to ask.
Junior Suite

Junior Suite

At 60sq m the Junior Suite is a step up in terms of size, allowing space for a separate lounge area with artworks, sofas and a fireplace.
Deluxe Suite

Deluxe Suite

Deluxe Suites are slightly bigger than their Junior Suite equivalent, though also enjoy an elevated position on the mansion’s higher floors, meaning superior views across the grounds. They are then adorned with the same gilded artworks, fireplace, beautiful bathroom and lounge area too.
Mansion House Room

Mansion House Room

Similar in size to the Deluxe option and also featuring a fireplace (in most), this category benefits from superior views of the hotel’s driveway and fountain.
Spring Cottage

Spring Cottage

Spring Cottage is a great choice if visiting Cliveden as a family, with three bedrooms able to sleep six people in total as well as a fully-equipped kitchen, two living rooms, fireplaces, a private boat mooring, private gardens and lake – not to mention the most perfect interior design too.
Mansion House Deluxe Suite

Mansion House Deluxe Suite

Mansion House Deluxe Suites enjoy lovely garden views, a fireplace, bespoke artworks and a 65sq m floorplan.
Inchiquin Suite

Inchiquin Suite

The 65sq m first floor Inchiquin Suite is a bespoke space of original features, incredible decor, oversized windows and garden views, antique artworks, an ornate fireplace and vintage standalone tub in the bathroom; certainly among the most unique spa suites anywhere.
Prince of Wales Suite

Prince of Wales Suite

The Prince of Wales Suite occupies the same part of the mansion – and individual features – as its Inchiquin and Lady Astor Suite equivalents, coming with a large 75sq m floorplan in addition to its entirely bespoke artworks, antiques and ornaments. This suite is also found on the second floor so enjoys elevated views of the estate.
Lady Astor Suite

Lady Astor Suite

Cliveden’s Lady Astor Suite is similar in size to the Prince of Wales Suite, and also boasts its own beautiful décor scheme and original features. The suite is found on the first floor, so benefits from a private terrace too.

Cliveden makes fine use of its ample grounds to offer everything you’ll need for a luxurious spa break, both for couples and families alike. The spa itself, nestled behind a walled garden, boasts a beautifully adorned indoor pool, and another outside surrounded by patio and flower beds, as well as a steam room, sauna, a small but modern gym, indoor and outdoor tennis courts plus several Jacuzzis too. Then, if travelling as a family, babysitting can also be arranged on top of the onsite child-friendly activities and games.

Cliveden Dining Room

Cliveden Dining Room

The Cliveden Dining Room may look like a perfectly preserved 17th century hall with its crystal chandeliers, gilded artworks and high ceilings, but the food served here is anything but stuck in the past. Proudly seasonal and locally sourced where possible, this is cutting-edge fine dining that takes inspiration from all over Europe to whip up refined dishes with whatever is in harvest. What’s more, you can opt for a la carte specialities such as black truffle risotto and rock scallops, or try the seven course tasting menu instead; both are equally enticing, for sure.

Astor Grill

Astor Grill

Astor Grill is a little more laidback than the Dining Room, though the gourmet food served here is just as delicious. Whether tucking into a salmon carpaccio, superfood salad or glass of champagne you can do it all either in the restaurant itself (located in a former stable building), or in the lounge bar area, overlooking one of Cliveden’s terraces and gardens beyond.

The gorgeous gardens, lawns, forests, spa and sports facilities are often enough to keep you entertained while staying at Cliveden, though those visiting with children will also enjoy the storybook play den, onsite maze and natural play trail through the woods for a bit of family fun. Vintage boat hire, champagne cruises and boat picnics are also available, as well as a regular calendar of events including Opera, themed dining experiences and the Cliveden literary festival. Nearby, you then have Windsor Castle, LEGOLAND, Odds Farm Park, Bekonscot Model Village, The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre to visit on a day trip.
