Full accommodation information

Nestled just outside Alta at 70° North, Norway, Holmen Husky Lodge is a year-round Arctic retreat where you’re embraced with a warm welcome, quiet comfort and a hands-on adventure.

Founded in 1986 by two passionate mushers, the lodge has grown into one of Europe’s leading dog sledding kennels, while remaining a family-built destination shaped by decades of life with sled dogs.

Your accommodation in this winter wonderland is one of seven architect-designed Forest Suites, a 62 m² A-frame cabin crafted from cross-laminated timber and set quietly within a pine forest. Designed for your comfort and to harbour a close connection to the outdoors, it offers a calm base in every season, whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or exploring the Arctic landscape at your own pace.

The lodge’s Barn, a renovated post-war structure, serves as the heart of Holmen Husky Lodge. Home to the reception, lounge and restaurant, it mixes a sense of history with modern functionality, always providing you with attentive service. And for moments of rest and recovery, the Arctic wellness area offers a wooden sauna, an ice bath and an outdoor jacuzzi. Spa sessions are booked in one-hour slots, ensuring a private, revitalising experience under the gaze of the radiant Arctic sky.

Dog sledding is at the core of Holmen, but the lodge also has a full spectrum of Arctic experiences. Winter adventures include snowmobiling, king crab fishing, reindeer encounters and guided Northern Lights excursions, all led by locals and crafted to bring you closer to the landscape.

Holmen Husky Lodge is best suited to those seeking an active Arctic stay, where expert guidance, hands-on adventures and calm, secluded accommodation create a retreat in Norway’s far north.

Stay in a Forest Suite, a 62 m² premium A-frame cabin designed for comfort and connection with nature. In winter, the snow-covered forest and dark skies create ideal Northern Lights viewing. With a two-night minimum stay, it offers peace, privacy and a slow, intentional Arctic retreat.

Forest Suite

Forest Suite

Immerse yourself in a pristine Arctic wilderness. The Forest Suite features a king-size bed and a separate living area, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding pine forest, and a private terrace allows you to step directly into the snow. In winter, watch the Northern Lights from your bed or step out with a morning coffee. Or, if you visit in summer, enjoy the long daylight hours and lush greenery, making it the perfect base for guided hikes, puppy playtime or fjord excursions.

Breakfast is served daily with everything from smoked salmon to freshly baked bread, Norwegian cold cuts, yoghurt, cereals and local products available to you. Lunch, which must be pre-booked, features Bacalao or chicken curry soup with rice and homemade bread. Dinner offers an à la carte menu in high season and a two-course local meat or fish option during other periods.

The Barn Restaurant

The Barn Restaurant

Set in the lodge’s renovated historic barn, The Barn has a rustic appeal mixed with modern comforts. Open exclusively for overnight stays, it plates up locally inspired Arctic cuisine in a warm, welcoming atmosphere, making it ideal for relaxing and dining after a day of Arctic adventures.

You can choose from a considered selection of Arctic adventures, with dog sledding at the core of Holmen’s winter offering. The 2.5-hour experience gives you a first taste of mushing along sections of the Finnmarksløpet trail, guided by expert mushers and surrounded by open snowfields. For a more in-depth journey, the signature five-day expedition allows you to work closely with your own sled dog team as you travel through remote wilderness, ending each day beneath dark skies or back in the comfort of your Forest Suite.

Winter also brings Northern Lights excursions, snowmobile trips across the Finnmark Plateau and whale-watching on Altafjord. When summer arrives, the pace softens: long daylight hours and quiet trails open up guided hikes, dry-land mushing with racing dogs, fat-bike rides, fjord fishing and time with puppies at the kennel.

Holmen Husky Lodge is committed to responsible Arctic travel, safeguarding the land, wildlife and people who call this spectacular region home. Officially certified as a Miljøfyrtårn (Eco-Lighthouse) business, the property meets national requirements for energy use, waste management, transportation and emissions, with measurable environmental targets reviewed annually.

Its eco-conscious practices include energy-efficient buildings and heating, eco-labelled cleaning products, systematic waste reduction and sourcing from local suppliers. Group sizes are limited, trails are maintained for minimal impact and local labour is prioritised in construction.

Holmen also fosters a supportive, inclusive workplace for its seasonal team of guides, mushers and hosts, providing proper training, safe working conditions and meaningful seasonal employment. By combining low-impact operations with education on Arctic ecology, the lodge encourages a lasting connection to the wilderness and inspires responsible stewardship of this unique environment.
