This palatial 16th-century villa, set beside tranquil Lake Como, was once the playground of the Italian aristocracy. Now Villa d’Este offers a wonderfully indulgent holiday experience in this exceptionally beautiful part of the world.

The formal and elegant Veranda restaurant overlooking the lake and gardens serve a traditional Italian haute cuisine menu accompanied by an extensive wine list, whilst more relaxed dining can be enjoyed at the cosy and chic Grill. Friday and Saturday nights at Villa d’Este are spent in gorgeous the d’Este Club and Terrace Bar, where a live band plays out on the terrace.

Days can be spent in the calming surroundings of the spa or unwinding in the villa's unique swimming pool which floats on the lake. The hotel's extensive sports facilities are also brilliant. If you’re looking for something a little more active, then head to the fitness centre, which features an array of modern equipment. Fitness fanatics will love the Sporting Club, which boasts an indoor pool, Turkish baths, squash courts, and an electronic golf simulator, which allows you to train on 10 different international golf courses.

If you prefer to be outdoors, then you’ll love the gorgeous 0.3-mile jogging trail that meanders through the hotel’s park. You’ll be surrounded by nature and your breath will be taken away by the spectacular views. Elsewhere, the Tennis Centre is home to several tennis pros for play or instruction, and of course, you can just have a knock around on one of the eight courts.

Out on the water, you can try your hand at windsurfing or waterskiing – Lake Como is a great place to practise – or rent a sailboat for the day. Canoeing is another popular pastime and a fantastic way to soak up the sensational scenery.
